WHAT IS INTEGRATING CITIES ?

The Integrating Cities process was launched in Rotterdam in 2006 and is a partnership between EUROCITIES and the European Commission to promote local level implementation of the Common Basic Principles on Integration. It is based on a conference series and a programme of work led by EUROCITIES in close cooperation with the European Commission.

Commitment to this process was reconfirmed through the 2007 Milan Declaration and developed further through the INTI-CITIES and DIVE projects. This process was further endorsed by the launch in 2010 of the EUROCITIES Charter on Integrating Cities which sets out cities’ commitment to integration of migrants.

The delivery of this Charter, through peer reviews and benchmarking, has been the main objective of the MIXITIES project which was implemented with support from the European Integration Fund.

On this website, you will find information on the established policy dialogue between EUROCITIES and the European Commission through the INTEGRATING CITIES Conference series, the EUROCITIES Charter on Integrating Cities and EU-funded projects INTI-CITIES, DIVE, MIXITIES as well as initiatives from EUROCITIES’ Working Group on Migration and Integration.

MIGRATION AND INTEGRATION WORKING GROUP

The EUROCITIES working group migration & integration consists of practitioners from more than 30 cities. It works both horizontally, providing an environment for mutual learning on integration governance, and vertically, as body that attempts to influence EU policies on migration and integration from a city perspective.

As most migrants come to live in cities, the working group wants to emphasise the importance of involving cities in the shaping and implementation of immigration/integration policies. The group aims to put into practice the objective of the new European agenda on integration that integration policies should be developed with a genuine ‘bottom-up’ approach“ and to have a stronger impact of local experience in EU policies.

The EUROCITIES “Integrating Cities Charter” provides an important framework for the group. The Charter sets out duties and responsibilities of European cities to embrace the diversity of their population and to provide equal opportunities in their roles as policy-makers, service providers, employers and buyers of goods and services to provide equal opportunities. It was launched in 2010 and has since been signed by over 25 cities. Member cities of the working group have been involved in four projects on integration governance, with the most current, ImpleMentoring running from 2011. The working group also organise the Integrating Cities Conferences.

SOLIDARITY CITIES

Solidarity Cities is an initiative on the management of the refugee crisis proposed by the Mayor of Athens and launched in the framework of the EUROCITIES network. It aims to constitute the framework under which all cities actions and initiatives are presented highlighting the political leadership of cities in addressing this challenge.

Solidarity Cities is open to all European cities wishing to work closely with each other and committed to solidarity in the field of refugee reception and integration.
